Traditional Li-HighPower batteries use round cells with a single tab at each pole. All current flows through that one point, which increases internal resistance and generates heat. Excess heat reduces runtime, shortens service life, and can cause the battery to shut down before all available capacity is used.
Tabless round cells use multiple tabs, allowing current to flow through several paths at once. This dramatically reduces internal resistance and heat buildup—resulting in longer runtime, longer battery life, and more consistent performance.
Think of it like traffic: a single-lane road versus a multi-lane highway. More lanes mean smoother flow and fewer slowdowns.
The tabless cell design delivers clear performance benefits.
Tabless Batteries:
- deliver a noticeable increase in performance,
- provide longer runtime,
- offer extended service life compared to conventional cell designs,
- maintain strong performance in both hot and cold conditions,
- charge faster than traditional batteries
TBX stands for Tabless Battery Extra Power.
The TBX designation appears on all Tabless batteries to make them easy to identify and to clearly distinguish them from previous Li‑HighPower batteries.
Tabless cell technology benefits all Festool 18V cordless tools. It acts as a performance upgrade across the entire 18V cordless lineup.
The existing 4.0 Ah and 8.0 Ah Li-HighPower batteries are being converted to tabless technology. These will be offered as TBX 4 and TBX 8 batteries.
The new TBX batteries fully replace the previous Li-HighPower batteries. They are not an additional option in the battery lineup.
No. Tabless batteries will be offered at the same price as the previous models. The performance benefits of tabless technology are passed on to customers at no additional cost.
No. All Festool 18V chargers remain fully compatible with tabless batteries. For the fastest charging times, use the SCA 16 battery charger.
No. The battery interface remains unchanged. TBX batteries are fully compatible with all Festool 18V cordless tools, just like the previous 4.0 Ah and 8.0 Ah Li-HighPower batteries. Features such as Bluetooth® functionality and the durable rubberized housing are also retained.
The biggest change is inside the battery with the move to tabless cell technology. Externally, updated labeling makes the new tabless batteries easy to identify and distinguish from previous Li-HighPower batteries.
This is due to the cell formats used in each battery:
4.0 Ah and 8.0 Ah batteries use 21700 cells
5.0 Ah batteries use 18650 cells
In the power tool category, higher-capacity batteries are increasingly based on the larger 21700 cell format. As a result, new cell technologies such as tabless designs are typically introduced there first. For this reason, tabless technology is currently used in the 4.0 Ah and 8.0 Ah batteries.
With the introduction of tabless batteries, we have refined our lineup to ensure each battery is well matched to specific tools and applications. The 5.0 Ah battery remains a strong choice for tools that benefit from a balanced mix of performance, runtime, and ergonomics.
It delivers ample power for these applications, in some cases more than the TBX 4 battery, while remaining noticeably lighter than the TBX 8. The result is a battery that helps reduce fatigue and makes handling easier during longer work sessions.
